Should I Consider Dental Implants?

A dental implant is a surgically placed artificial tooth root used to permanently affix a crown in place of a missing tooth. Teeth may need to be replaced for any number of reasons, from sports related accidents to decay, there is no guarantee your teeth will last forever.

The main advantage of dental implants is that they are permanent. Implants become a part of your jawbone, and as such retain the structure of your jaw. Implants are strong, reliable, and ultimately more cost effective than any other tooth replacement option.

Implants vs. Dentures

Like dentures, implants are a replacement for missing teeth. Unlike dentures, however, implants are permanent. Dentures are removable and while some can be clipped to dental implants, most have to be held into place with adhesives. Adhesives are expensive and can be unreliable. Implants will never slip or fall out, providing constant comfort, functionality, and ease.

Bone fractures or deficiencies in the jaw can lead to potential health risks and interfere with the placement of implants. Bone grafting is not always necessary to receive dental implants; but if your dentist determines that your jaw needs to be fortified in order to maintain facial structure, bone grafting may precede dental implants.

Procedure

Dental implants are a surgical procedure performed in your dentist’s office.  A hole is drilled into your jawbone in which the implant is placed. Once the implant has healed, a titanium screw is inserted into the implant. This screw can anchor clip-on dentures or hold a porcelain crown in place.

Once completed, your implant will be a permanent part of your smile, ensuring maximum comfort and functionality for the rest of your life.

Candidates

Anyone missing teeth, whether from accident, birth, or extraction, is a candidate for dental implants. Dental implants are perfect for people dissatisfied with the maintenance and placement of dentures, as well as for those who are replacing missing teeth for the first time. Strong, permanent, and comfortable, dental implants are ideal for people from all walks of life.
