Root canal or implant or ???
My two front teeth have both had root canals and crowns (I broke them off as a child). My left front is giving me pain, but since my DDS prescribed a pain reliever, we couldn’t determine if it was my left front or my left canine (?) that was giving me pain.
Four days later and I’m still in pain … maybe not as much though. He’s had me on Penicillin to remove any infection that might be the problem, but I’m still at a quandry of what to do.
The root canal on the left front is somewhat shallow (he suspects that the root could be cracked, but the xray isn’t clear).
One of my best friends is a dental surgeon in the San Diego area and he was suppose to take care of an unrelated “lengthening” and crown on a molar, but I’ve not been able to get there (I’m in Charlotte, NC but have plenty of freq. flyer miles).
My questions are these:
1. Probability that this will resolve by itself with the antibiotic?
2. Should REPEAT rootcanal?
3. Go to CA & get implnt?
4. Do nothing?
You could have two problems. If the root canal is incompletely filled, it could cause infection and could be redone to alleviate the under-fill. A cracked root is a different issue and most of the time does not show on x-ray. A crack will not resolve and the root will need to be removed. Antibiotics will not help in the long run if the source of the infection is not eliminated. An implant is a possibility if the root has to be removed, but it is not as predictable in an area of previous root canal or infection. Your oral surgeon friend can give you more information on this. An implant is a good choice in most cases although a bridge can work well. Don’t do nothing. The pain and infection may go away, but they will return if the cause is not dealt with. Good Luck
