Preventative Dentistry and You
We have all been told since we were very young that we need to brush and floss our teeth daily. Though this is the foundation of preventative dentistry, there is much more to keeping your smile healthy.
Preventative dentistry is the field of dentistry that focuses on keeping your teeth healthy so you can avoid dental emergencies or any painful dental problems. There are two parts to preventative dentistry: an at home dental care plan and routine dental checkups.
Your At Home Dental Care Plan
You are the most important person in preventative dentistry because your at home dental care plan will keep any plaque from building up and causing dental problems such as:
- Cavities
- Gingivitis
- Periodontal Disease
- Abscessed Teeth
- Sensitive Teeth
Plaque is an almost clear, tacky, and soft film that builds on the teeth from bacteria and food. It can be removed easily with brushing, flossing, and regular dental visits. If it is not removed, it will infect the gums causing them to become inflamed and develop gingivitis. Untreated, gingivitis can lead to periodontal disease. Plaque can also eat through the enamel of a tooth and cause a cavity. If the cavity is not filled, the plaque will continue to make a larger hole and cause more pain.
You can remove the plaque by creating an at home dental care plan with these few steps:
- Brush at least twice daily and after you eat food or drink anything with sugar
- Floss after every meal or at least when you brush your teeth
- Rinse your mouth with a mouthwash to remove gingivitis-causing bacteria from the gum line
Visiting Your General Dentist Regularly
Some people believe they do not have to visit the dentist if they have a great at home dental plan. A dental plan that you follow at home will prevent many dental problems from occurring, but you still need to get regular dental checkups and professional cleanings.
At your dental checkup, your dentist will examine your teeth and gums and make sure that small cavities are not forming. Your dentist will also clean your teeth and provide you with other general dentistry treatments and solutions.
There are other dental issues that you may not see or feel in the early stages. A dentist will be able to see any small dental problems before they become painful or a dental emergency.
Some of the dental issues a dentist will notice include:
- Tiny cavities that develop in nooks in the teeth where a toothbrush cannot clean
- Sores or red spots in the mouth that may be a sign of oral cancer
- Impacted teeth that may cause problems later
Preventative dentistry is also about getting the dental care you need to keep your teeth healthy. This means that you get all of your cavities filled, replace any missing or damaged teeth, or restore any teeth that are cracked or chipped. By getting the general dentistry solutions you need along with your at home dental care plan, you will help your teeth stay in the best of health.
