General Dentistry Myths
There are many general dentistry myths floating around. Some of them seem factual and, thus, believable. It is important to know and understand the general dentistry myths so you do not neglect your teeth and possibly damage your smile.
Dental Myth #1: I should only visit the dentist if I notice a problem. I brush and floss every day and do not notice any dental issues.
Truth: Brushing and flossing every day is important to keep your smile healthy and happy. Dental issues do happen no matter how diligent you are with brushing and flossing. Cavities can form in hard to reach places or teeth can chip or crack. If these issues are left unnoticed, the cavity or the chip or crack will worsen causing pain. By visiting a dentist regularly, any dental issues that may be forming without your knowledge will be caught and treated immediately so they do not further harm your teeth or cause you pain.
Dental Myth #2: I should not have my teeth whitened because the treatment will harm my teeth’s enamel.
Truth: Teeth whitening gel has improved over the years and is very safe on your teeth and gums. The gel will not eat away at your enamel, but it will help remove stains and discoloration that yellow and dull your teeth.
Dental Myth #2: Missing teeth only need to be replaced for aesthetic reasons.
Truth: A missing tooth may cause several damaging dental issues that will require many more cosmetic dentistry procedures to correct. A gap in the jawbone and in between the teeth is left when a damaged tooth is removed. This gap gives the adjacent teeth the ability to move and shift in position. If the teeth move, they may rub against each other damaging the roots. Damaged roots will cause much pain and the tooth may need a root canal. Also, the jawbone is no longer supported where the missing tooth once was. Without the support, the jawbone will lose density and thin.
To avoid these painful dental issues, you will want to have your missing tooth replaced with implant dentistry. Your missing tooth will be replaced with a dental implant that will act as a tooth’s root and a replacement tooth that will look and feel like your natural teeth.
